Veery
Description: Reddish brown bird with white belly. Spotting on upper part of breast and throat. Its beautiful call resounds from the gloom of the woodland's dusk.
Nest: Cup woven of grasses, leaves, weed stems and moss. On the ground, usually sheltered by a tussock of grass, fallen branches, bushes, or ferns. The regrowth at the base of hawthorns is a frequently chosen nesting site. Sometimes just off the ground in a shrub. Often in a wet, low area.
Eggs: 3-5 eggs, slightly darker than robin eggs and smaller.
Habitat: Low wet areas, sometimes near water. Deciduous woodlands, field edges, and moist thickets. They tend to be in the understory of the forest, rarely venturing to the tree tops.
Diet: Insects, spiders and fruit. Tends to forage on the forest floor especially early in the morning or near dusk. Although they prefer to turn through the leaf litter on the forest floor, they do capture insects out of the air on occasion.
