Eastern Pondhawk
Description: Male: medium sized dragonfly with blue abdomen and parts of thorax with green coloring on head and thorax. Wings are clear. Female: Overall bright green with reddish brown bands on abdomen. Juveniles look like females but the makes eventually attain their blue coloration as they age until almost all the green is obscured.
Habitat: Meadows, streams, swamps, yards and forest edges. They are most conspicuous when basking on rocks, plants or flat surfaces.
Reproduction: Eggs are laid in slow moving streams and swamps where the larvae will live until they emerge as adults.
Diet: Aggressively pursues flying insects, often taking bigger prey than other larger species of dragonflies eat. They frequently capture butterflies and moths, damselflies, beetles, flies and even smaller dragonflies. Larvae feed on aquatic insects.
