Black-Capped Chickadee
Description: Buff colored bird with bray tail and wings with black cap and throat. Very familiar and tame around humans. In late summer, individuals become bedraggled in appearance as they come closer to the fall molt. Sexes similar.
Nest: Cavity nesting in bird boxes, natural cavities, woodpecker holes or digging their own cavities into rotten wood. Height of the hole can be just off the ground in a stump to high above in a dead snag. Cavity is lined with mosses, soft plant fibers and hairs.
Eggs: 5-12 white eggs marked with chestnut and brown.
Diet: Mainly insects and spiders. In winter they feed on seeds and hibernating insects foraged from bark or off the ground. They are abundant at feeders taking suet, peanut butter and sunflower seeds.
Habitat: A wide variety of habitats as long as there are suitable nesting locations. They are especially frequent in deciduous forests and woodland edges. They have also adapted to many urban areas.
