Wood Frog
Wood Frog
Description: Tan or brown frog with a dark "Mask" over its lower eye and side of head. Underside is creamy or white. The cryptically colored wood frog is usually only seen when it leaps away from a passerby.
Call: raspy and similar to a raspy duck's quack heard very early in the spring. Although higher numbers call at night they can still be heard in the day as they call from springtime forest pools.
Eggs: A mass of eggs laid in woodland pools in early spring. These frogs tend to prefer impermanent spring pools or water that is secluded from larger bodies of water.
Habitat: Moist woodlands especially deciduous or mixed. Mainly terrestrial, these frogs are only found in water in the mating season.
Diet: Insects, spiders, woodlice, millipedes, daddy long-legs, and earthworms. Mainly an ambush predator, Wood frogs will leap to snatch prey out of reach.
