Bobolink
Description: Male: Black bird with buff nape and upper back, white on wings and rump with pinkish legs. Female: harder to identify, overall tan with varying shades of brown among its wings and a distinct lighter eyebrow.
Nest: Open cup built from grasses and weed stems. Built on the ground in a meadow or other natural grassland. Birds return to the nest by discreetly walking through the grass to the site.
Eggs: 3-7, creamy eggs heavily marked with reddish brown.
Habitat: Grasslands, meadows, pastures and fields. Bobolinks sing their bubbly songs from trees, shrubs, tall weeds and grass tufts around their territory. They benefit from later cuttings of hay fields and other such practices.
Diet: Insects and seeds foraged in the grass and weeds in which they live.
