House Fly (Musca domesticus)
House Fly
Description: Gray overall with black stripes on the thorax. Compound eyes are red and wings are clear with amber veins and bases.
Diet: Adults feed on sugary substances and a variety of human foods, garbage, scraps, decaying items and nectar. Larvae feed on horse manure and garbage. Food is dissolved with saliva and consumed through a sucking mouth-part. Persistent and annoying pests, they eat household food and incessantly land on humans and surfaces. They have flourished with the growth of civilization and domestication of animals.
Habitat: Found almost anywhere that food is available. Particularly homes, restaurants, farms, compost heaps and garbage sites. They seem to swarm around outdoor restaurants, ice cream stands and parks where trash and food is available.
Reproduction: Eggs are laid on food sources for larvae such as animal manure and garbage. Maggots develop quickly and pupate in the soil nearby their feeding site.
